What is Ramadan?

March 11 through April 9th marks a time in the Muslim calendar called Ramadan. Ramadan is basically a holy month of fasting for the Islamic faith. Ramadan is also based on the period of the appearance of the crescent moon.

In the Islamic faith, Ramadan is meant to be a period of introspection, communal praying in the mosque, and the reading of the Quran. During this time Muslims take part in an extended fast (called sawm), which includes refraining from food, drink, sexual activity and any bad deed.

At the end of Ramadan, Muslims participate in a great feast called the Eid al-Fitr which means “Feast of Fast-Breaking”.
